On August 27, 2026, NASA astronaut Jonny Kim left the agency to resume his military service.

Thursday marks astronaut Jonny Kim's final day at NASA after nearly a decade of service with the agency, including an eight-month scientific expedition aboard the International Space Station. He will continue his service in the U.S. Navy with the rank of lieutenant commander.

Kim traveled to the space station in April 2025 aboard the Soyuz MS-27 spacecraft to conduct scientific research as a flight engineer during Expeditions ISS-72 and ISS-73. During the mission, he completed 3,920 orbits of Earth, traveled nearly 104 million miles, and contributed to a wide range of scientific research, spanning technology development, Earth science, biology, and the study of the effects of space on humans.

In December 2025, Kim and his Roscosmos colleagues landed safely in Kazakhstan. Kim was selected for the NASA astronaut corps in 2017 and underwent two years of training, which included studying space station systems, the Russian language, robotics, and T-38 aircraft piloting, as well as coursework in geology, extreme-environment survival, and spacewalk preparation. Jonny Kim was born in Los Angeles and enlisted in the U.S. Navy after graduating from high school in 2002. He trained as a combat medic and completed the Navy SEAL training pipeline, subsequently joining SEAL Team 3. Having participated in over 100 combat operations as a medic, sniper, navigator, and point man, he was awarded the Silver Star, the Bronze Star with "V" device (for valor), and numerous other decorations. He earned a bachelor's degree in mathematics from the University of San Diego and a medical degree from Harvard Medical School. He completed his internship at Massachusetts General Hospital and Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston. Kim qualified as a naval aviator and flight surgeon after completing flight training at Naval Air Stations Corpus Christi (Texas) and Whiting Field (Florida), as well as an aerospace medicine course at the Naval Aerospace Medical Institute at Naval Air Station Pensacola.

Kim is returning to active duty to complete his career in naval aviation training.
